Crawford Company is warning that the UKs recent civil disturbances are unlikely to be expressly declared a “Riot” by the police, irrespective of media coverage and references to the same.
However, claims under the Riot Damages Act 1886 must be received by the local police authority within 14 days of an alleged incident, and the firm is advising those affected to check out their policy claims notification requirements, so as not to prejudice insurers positions in the event a recovery for Riot exists.
Riot or not, Crawford has categorised the unrest as a major incident, saying the bulk of claims are of high value, ranging from £100,000 to £10 million plus.
Yesterday, the firm closed its Croydon office, which is based in a retail centre, diverting calls and staff to safer locations.
