Although you may tend to think of trailer tents as being the little brother of more conventional touring caravans, it may be comforting to know that trailer tent insurance can offer the same high levels of cover that are typically available for their bigger siblings.
New for old
The age of your trailer tent and the number of previous owners may typically be used to determine the basis of replacement should it be damaged beyond the point where repairs would be a realistic option.
You may also find that some policies may require that you have been the only owner of the vehicle from new to benefit from new for old replacement.
Awnings
Cover for awnings may be available as a separate option of trailer tent insurance and may be based on the requirement that the awning is securely stowed away whenever you leave your trailer tent – so as to help reduce the risk of damage from sudden storms.
Theft protection
The use of a hitchlock and a wheel clamp may be a requirement of your cover whenever your trailer tent is not attached to the towing vehicle and you are not present.
If attached to the towing vehicle then a wheel clamp may typically be all that is required, but do check your policy for clarification.
Discounts
As with touring caravans, you may find that discounts on premiums may be available in some circumstances.
For example:
- choosing a site which has a good safety record in terms of flooding, thefts and vandalism;
- belonging to a recognised caravan club or association;
- fitting an approved tracking device.
These may all result in lower premiums for your trailer tent insurance without compromising on levels of cover provided and that can only be a good thing!
If you are thinking about cheap caravan insurance, you may find the following observations to be of some use:
- the word ‘cheap’ may mean different things to different people and what is cheap for someone else may not necessarily prove to be cheap for you it depends very much upon your individual situation;
- caravan insurance that proclaims itself to be “cheap caravan insurance” may not necessarily be able to offer its headline low prices to you;
- an insurance policy that offers the lowest price may not prove to be suitable for you this is typically not something you will wish to discover for the first time when you need to try and make a claim;
- the obvious conclusion following on from the point above is that it is extremely important to study carefully what cover the policy is offering before you start to focus too closely on its price;
- headline prices can be deceptive for example, some policies may appear to be marginally more expensive, in headline terms, but may offer greater opportunities for obtaining discounts through things such as becoming a member of an approved caravanning association (these may be known as caravan club insurance discounts);
- to really understand the true potential costs of a policy, it may be necessary to study, in a little detail, those sections of the policy described as ‘the terms and conditions’ that is because some of them may place obligations on you, the policyholder, that you may find difficult to comply with;
- it is typically a sound idea to focus initially on a combination of your requirements, the cover the policy is offering and its terms and conditions – parking, at least for a period, too much focus on headline claims that it constitutes “cheap caravan insurance”.
There may be a lot to be said for ‘better the devil you know’. If that’s applied to caravans and their insurance, what’s the point in trying to compare caravan insurance if you’re happy with the cover you already have?
It’s a fair question! The answer is all about change.
The caravan insurance marketplace, just like many others, constantly changes. Your existing cover may have been excellent when you first took it out and it may well still be, however, you’re unlikely to be able to know that for sure unless you periodically decide to test it against what else is available.
For example, you may wish to compare caravan insurance options in the market against your own in areas such as:
- pricing;
- the nature of the caravan cover provided – e.g. how do policies

Keeping up to date on tourer caravan insurance may be high up on any committed caravanners list of priorities.
This may not be quite so difficult as it may have been in the past because you can now compare tourer caravan Insurance policies from a number of different providers on the internet.
This may make matching whats on offer, against your own list of priorities for your touring caravan, a fairly painless experience and one that you should carry out regularly.
Things that you may feel are important for your touring caravan insurance could include features like:
- new for old replacement for your contents – some policies may only offer market value replacement, which may leave you footing a substantial bill if you have to buy replacements;
- getting discounts for steps that you take for improving the security of your caravan for example, by fitting a tracking device or installing alarms;
- cover for unlimited continental travel included as standard – some policies may only offer cover for a specific number of days or miles travelled, others may impose a UK only limit;
- discounts available for membership of recognised caravan clubs, where experiences and knowledge can be shared.
Your tourer may also be a target for thieves, so using a provider who insists on precautions like hitchlocks and wheel clamps may mean that overall caravans are safer, possibly resulting in fewer claims and lower premiums.
Making sure that your caravan insurance meets your requirements is your responsibility.
Simply renewing your policy year after year may mean that you are missing out on some improvements in the cover available in the marketplace. Get

How many of us actually read our insurance policy documents when they drop through the letterbox? Insurance Blogger has just renewed my home insurance and the particular policy booklet is thicker than the local freeads, that arrived at the same time. So this got me thinking about all those people who purchase home insurance cover online and are probably under-insured in some minor or major way!
Although many people who own their own houses in the UK are likely to have some type of basic insurance policy on their property, the extent of that cover, sometimes turns out to be entirely inadequate for the misfortunate few who thought they had bought a good deal.

Trying to compare caravan insurance quotes isn’t always easy. Here are a few tips that may help:
- costs – yes, the price (premium) of your caravan insurance is important but try to keep it in perspective against what the policy is offering, as a lowest-cost policy may not, in reality, offer you the cover you need;
- contents – different caravan insurance quotes may offer a very different approach to contents cover, for example, some may offer market-valuation replacement whereas others may provide full new-for-old protection;
- externals – policies may or may not cover things such as awnings and satellite dishes;
- sites – policies may have very different views as to what facilities your site must offer before they may consider your caravan to be under cover on it (e.g. permanent
