The insurance market place has changed dramatically over recent years mainly due to increasing use of the internet. Motorhome insurance is no exception to this general trend.

Online insurance suppliers have provided motorhome owners with a much wider selection of policies and this increase in both choice and competition may mean that the good deal you negotiated years ago for your motorcaravan cover may not represent good value for money now.

Savings

There are a number of ways in which it may be possible to make some savings on the size of your insurance premiums.

Some insurance providers regard being a member of a recognised motorhome or caravanning club as a sign of responsibility and seriousness. Clubs can be forums for information exchange where safety hints and tips can be shared and some insurers offer discounts to club members.

Since your motor home was probably fairly expensive, keeping it safe may be high on your priority list. If you take steps to protect your investment by fitting security alarms and tracking devices, you may find that some insurers reward these safety measures with discounted premiums.

Keeping your motor home parked on your drive rather than the public highway may help reduce risks of theft or vandalism and may also be regarded favourably by some insurance providers.

Driving habits

In addition to changes in the marketplace, your driving habits may have changed too and this could mean that a fresh look at your level of motorhome insurance cover may prove beneficial.

For example, you may find that over the years the number of miles that you travel in your motor home has reduced. You could therefore possibly benefit from a policy that offers reductions in your premium if you keep your annual mileage within certain limits.

Similarly, if you no longer take your holidays abroad, preferring to restrict travel to the UK, then paying for European cover (continental cover) may mean that you have motor home insurance that you don’t actually need.

Recreational vehicle

You should also bear in mind that your motorhome policy cover may very well have been based on the assumption that your motor home is being used on an occasional or recreational basis only. Use of your motor home for regular daily commuting on busy roads at peak times increases risk and may actually invalidate your motorhome insurance policy if commuting is excluded from the cover (as it is with most motorcaravan insurance policies)..
