If you have a motor home, it’s probably a fair bet that it constitutes a large financial investment. Insuring it against some risks is a legal requirement but thinking about the wider implications of motor home insurance may also be a very smart idea.
Motor homes as vehicles
Your motor home is a driveable vehicle and the law demands that you have a certain minimum insurance – typically third party.
Yet unlike a standard car, your motor home probably contains a range of expensive fittings and contents. Given that you’ll typically leave it parked and unattended quite frequently as you go off to explore your destination, theft and vandalism are very real risks.
Therefore, basic third-party fire and theft type cover alone may not be suitable.
Motor home insurance protection
It may be advisable to think carefully about whether or not your policy should cover you for things such as:
- replacement of fixtures, fittings and contents on a new-for-old or market value basis;
- full replacement of the vehicle if damaged by natural causes, accident or loss due to theft;
- temporary accommodation costs if your vehicle suffers major problems while on holiday.
Many policies that offer more comprehensive protection will also ask that you meet certain conditions. These may in some cases be obligatory or in others they may be related to being able to reduce the premium.
Typically these include:
- the requirement to fit (or have included as a standard vehicle feature) an immobiliser;
- the fitting of special locks on doors and windows plus alarms;
- joining an owners’ association to benefit from the experience and knowledge of others;
- the securing of external appliances and accessories (eg. awnings) if you are planning to leave the vehicle unattended;
- not leaving high-value items in the motor home while it is unattended – definitions here vary but this may include cash, chequebooks, credit cards and jewellery etc;
- not using your vehicle for commuting;
- reducing the number of days per annum that your vehicle is driven outside of the UK.
Motor home insurance could help you avoid financial catastrophe in the event you encountered some bad luck. Choosing it carefully is a very good idea.
