Few of us like spending time thinking about insurance but if you have a motor caravan then you ignore motor caravan insurance at your peril.

Why?

Insurance is important in many areas of life.

In the case of a motor caravan, you probably have a fairly significant chunk of your capital tied up in it. That capital, in full or part, could be at serious risk if you have an accident or other problem that damages (or even destroys) your vehicle.

Motor caravan insurance exists to try and help you make sure that your risks in those respects are covered.

What does the insurance cover?

Always with insurance, it depends upon the policy you’ve taken out.

Broadly speaking, your caravan needs to be insured against a variety of generic risks:

  • traffic accident related protection – this often includes third party cover as a legal minimum;
  • theft of the vehicle;
  • natural disasters – typically covering risks such as floods and fires etc;
  • theft of the contents, fixtures and fittings and possible external accessories such as awnings etc;
  • vandalism and related problems arising from forced entry.

The extent to which these things are covered individually will vary between insurers and policies – checking carefully is a good idea.

What do I have to do?

Apart from paying for the policy, the insurance companies typically ask that you do a number of things to ensure that your policy remains valid. These conditions may include:

  • taking due care by fitting appropriate security bolts, locks and immobilisers to the vehicle plus perhaps alarms;
  • restricting drivers to those authorised by the policy (unless you have any driver cover);
  • stowing any awnings and possibly other external fittings when the vehicle is unoccupied;
  • not taking the vehicle outside of the UK for longer that the maximum number of days permitted by the policy.

Insurance checks

It’s very easy to just allow your policy to renew automatically each year. That may be fine, but finding the time to think about your requirements and looking around may be beneficial. Motor caravan insurance is necessary but there’s no reason to pay more for it than you need to.
