Mobile home insurance applies to mobile homes – but that definition may mean different things to different people.
To some people, a mobile home may be another name for a park home. In other words, a dwelling that is located on a site that is formally registered with the local authorities as being a park home site.
They are typically permanently occupied as your main place of residence. As such, they are not:
- static caravans located on holiday sites and used primarily for occasional holidays and recreation;
- prefabricated accommodation used in the major cities between the 1930s-1970s, which are also commonly referred to as mobile homes.
Park or mobile home insurance covers your property against a range of risks. That includes things that may happen to put at risk your home’s basic structure and fabric due to natural disasters such as storms and floods etc.
Your contents typically will be similarly covered although there the additional risks of theft and vandalism may need to be taken into account.
Finally, it may be advisable to consider your position vis-à-vis third party liability.
Although hopefully it will never happen, should someone be injured or suffer property loss as a result of your park home, they may due you for damages. If you lose, the court awards against you may be very high indeed. That is why third party liability insurance exists and it is worth considering.
Park home insurance, as per any insurance, may come with conditions and opportunities.
For example, you may be able to reduce the cost of your insurance if you fit additional security devices such as locks and alarms. You may also be able to reduce the cost of your insurance if you choose a park home that is not located in an area listed as being prone to flooding.
Carefully reading the conditions of your mobile home insurance policy is typically a very sound idea.
